Let’s go back in time. At least before 2020 was a thing, back to a time when I invested in beauty boxes. I once received some minis from the cruelty-free beauty brand OSEA.
I happily used them and thought nothing more of it.
Until this year, when I finally invested more time and even more time (thanks 2020!) into appreciating and understanding some beauty brands. And their entire business beliefs. The more I know products, the more I feel compelled to explore a brand further.
OSEA is a cruelty-free beauty brand that I have just fallen in love with. A small, family-run business out of Malibu, CA (what sounds more enticing?)
Finding out where a company such as OSEA planted its roots and how it began does help to create a context. And honestly, it makes a difference as a consumer. When you finally use a product that you feel you can stand behind. I guess it’s a validation of sorts. All ‘part of the consumer experience’?

The OSEA Story
OSEA (Ocean, Sun, Earth, Atmosphere) is all about bringing high quality, cruelty-free, and ethically sourced beauty products to your skin.
How about taking a look at their website here. It contains a lot of great information and a lovely back story as to the formation of OSEA.
Another invaluable tool on their site is their Skin Quiz. It gently (and with a subtle twist of humor for good measure!) works out your skin type. The Skin Quiz recommends the products which will help YOU specifically. It makes it all very easy!
OSEA’s affinity with the ocean and algae is fascinating. I loved learning about the Palmer family’s history. Their great family matriarch Elsa Rueschle who, among other accomplishments, became one of the first female chiropractors in the US, graduating in 1921.
After injuring her leg, Elsa began swimming in the Long Island Sound waters near her home. After just a few weeks of swimming, her injuries healed. The responsible party? Seaweed within the water that she swam in every day.
Elsa began to collect Fucus (Bladderwrack algae) from the waters and incorporate it into her own chiropractic treatment sessions. Elsa carried on doing this until she was well into her 90’s. What an amazing human being!
The family tradition continued with Elsa’s granddaughter Jenefer Palmer whose holistic healing practices eventually led to OSEA forming in 1996.
Jenefer’s daughter Melissa, a co-founder and CEO of OSEA, hails from a background in her own small businesses and digital marketing. She is a powerhouse of an entrepreneur in her own right. Pretty inspiring.
What’s not to love about this brand?
OSEA is all of the following:
•Family run
•Female owned
•Small batch, high-quality products
•Cruelty-free beauty
•Vegan
•Ethically sourced
•Recyclable packaging
Furthermore, OSEA’s customer service is exemplary.
I recently had an issue with the delivery of an OSEA order for myself (yes, I proudly buy from companies I like) and OSEA resolved it almost immediately. So I can vouch for them as well.

Counteract Coalition
A timely grouping of clean beauty companies was formed just a few short years ago and named the Counteract Coalition. This movement was put together by one of OSEA’s competitors in the clean beauty field, Beauty Counter. (But more about Beauty Counter another day)!
Counteract Coalition maintains the need for product transparency at its forefront. And they aim to be influential in creating stricter guidelines and changing laws regarding the ingredients in our cosmetics. And I couldn’t agree more with their values and objectives.
At this moment in 2020, there are 29 beauty brands on the Coalition board. Companies in direct competition with one another have joined forces. This seems almost unheard of within a single industry! But with the greater good as their main goal, this is definitely not worth neglecting.
I look forward to seeing this movement gain momentum and strength in the future.
Counteract Coalition Brands include:
- Annmarie Gianni Skin Care
- Beebe Lab/Eighteen B
- Biossance
- Côte
- Credo
- Follain
- Goddess Garden
- Grove Collaborative
- I+I Botanicals
- Innersense Organic Beauty
- Josie Maran
- KORA Organics
- May Lindstrom
- ONDA Beauty
- OSEA
- Peet Rivko
- People of Color
- Primal Pit Paste
- Rahua Hair Care
- rms beauty
- Seventh Generation
- Sienna Naturals
- Silk Therapeutics
- SkinOwl
- S.W. Basics

OSEA Malibu’s position in the cruelty-free clean beauty field is firmly set as a cult favorite. Looking ahead, I hope we see this industry go onwards and upwards. And gain all the strength and momentum to a point where it is in the mainstream for our beauty products NOT to be riddled with cancer causing or harmful chemicals. Imagine that?
My Osea Go-To’s
Sea Minerals Mist

A powerful spray applicator gives you a burst of refreshing hydration. The Sea Minerals Mist is full of seaweed! Yes, two different types in fact.
Gigartina Seaweed that will provide hydration and support the barrier in your skin through its collagen supply.
Undaria Seaweed will help to reduce wrinkles and fine lines. It is also going to benefit those among us who experience redness. Full of iodine, iron, potassium, calcium and vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6 and B12. It’s like a multivitamin for your face!
Aloe Vera is anti-oxidant rich and will play a key role in soothing the skin. Along with Undaria Seaweed, it will also help to combat redness in the skin’s surface.
Dead Sea Salt is rich in potassium, calcium, zinc, and magnesium to calm the skin. We all know that the benefits of Dead Sea Salt form a list as long as your arm. From promoting tissue healing to helping moisture balance and protecting against sun and windburn. A modern wonder mineral indeed!
Everyone needs Osea Sea Minerals Mist. It’s just so efficient.
Undaria Algae Body Oil

Osea Undaria Algae Body Oil is a practical, lightweight oil that will go the distance in hydrating your skin. As we have just learned about Undaria Algae, it will help reduce fine lines in your skin. But let’s learn what else is in the oil.
Acai (Euterpe Oleracea) Berry Oil which contains vitamins B, C and E. Alongside a slew of anti-oxidants and fatty acids to nourish and help keep your skin protected.
Babassu (Orbignea Oleifera) Seed Oil will assist in restoring the natural oil balance of your skin. Being rich in vitamin E will also provide anti-aging benefits too. It does all of this and still won’t leave your skin feeling oily. In fact, this product is incredibly fast to absorb.
Passion Fruit (Passiflora Edulis) Seed Oil is full of vitamin C which will help to smooth your skin and lock in moisture.
Sesame (Sesamum Indicum) Seed Oil is full of Omega 6 fatty acids and vitamin E to deliver protection to your skin and supply ceramides to help the skin barrier keep nourished and stay firm.
This oil smells so zesty good when it goes on too. I suspect due to the grapefruit peel oil it contains. So fresh!
Have you used OSEA Malibu before? Perhaps you are a long time devotee of this cruelty-free beauty brand? Comment below and share your favorite product or OSEA routine. We’d love to hear!
In the meantime, all this seaweed talk, now I want to go to the beach!
