Sheet Masks have become quite the Miss Popularity of late, haven’t they?
There’s the notion that we can pop one on, at any time, and give ourselves a quick fix, an instant pamper. And at no extra cost, a fabulous selfie, for good measure.

I guess that’s what has caused sheet masks to have such an epic explosion in popularity in recent years.

If truth be told, I’m wearing one right now! What better reason?

There will be no selfie. If you haven’t noticed yet, I’m not really a selfie kind of girl.

I’m sporting the 111 Rose Gold Facial Treatment Mask that I uncovered in one of my advent calendars last Christmas.

And it feels delightful!

I’m going to give you 13 reasons why you need a sheet mask right now!
Are you ready?

Join me in learning 13 reasons why you need a sheet mask right now.
Some of them might just surprise you.

,

1. Sheet Masks Can Help Refine Skin Pores

By choosing a sheet mask containing charcoal (which is known to draw out impurities in the skin, and mildly exfoliate, you can help reduce and refine your pores).

Check out Boscia Black Charcoal Pore-Minimizing Hydrogel Mask to take the hard work out of your pore management.

2. Increase Your Skin’s Hydration

Let’s not deny it. Most sheet masks are designed to moisturize. So if you have dry skin and are looking for a quick moisture boost, then a sheet mask can be your first stop.

Try the Dr Jart+ Vital Hydra Solution Deep Hydration Mask Sheet 5 Set for a thirst quench for your face.

3. Diminish Fine Lines and Wrinkles

Look for collagen filled sheet masks to help lessen the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

One of my favorite luxury brands Le Mieux has just the answer with their Le Mieux Bio Cell+ Mask which is filled with collagen, peptides, and hyaluronic acid to reduce the size and depth of fine lines and wrinkles.

All that in just 15 minutes.

4. Help To Even Out Your Skin Tone

Yes, you can benefit from a sheet mask that helps to even out blotchiness or dark spots.

Try the lovely Even Skin Tone Sheet Mask from Florapy which is made with sunflower and lemon to help promote a flawless skin tone and reduce dark spots.

Even better, the sheet mask is made from 100% coconut fibers.

5. Help Your Skin to Feel Firmer

Check out Lancer Lift and Plump Sheet Mask. Dr. Lancer only produces incredibly efficacious skin care products. You pay more, but it’s worth it.

6. Relaxation

Truly, my favorite part of donning a sheet mask is being able to lie back and have some time to myself.

If you can make this a routine and stick to it, you may never need to spend a fortune on getting facials ever again!

So, relax!

7. Deep Cleanse Your Skin

If you’re in need of a deep cleanse in your sheet mask, look no further than Puriface Dermal Purifying Sheet Mask.

It is made with Spirulina, Eucalyptus, and Aloe Vera, to gently but deeply give your skin the cleanse it needs.

8. Improve the Elasticity of Your Skin

It is known that collagen in your skin provides elasticity, so look for a sheet mask that contains collagen, among other ingredients.

Try the Heivy Collagen Boosting Oolong Tea Sheet Mask if this is your number one concern in your next sheet mask treatment.

9. Help Your Skin with Breakouts

While sheet masks won’t provide an outright cure for any of your skin issues, they can help relieve and ease these conditions.

If you experience breakouts every now and then, try a sheet mask made with benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, or things like tea-tree oil, papaya, or yogurt to help ease those first signs of breakouts.

The Rael Bamboo Tea Tree Sheet Masks are perfect for helping provide antioxidants to your skin and soothe angry skin when breakouts occur.

I love Rael for all of its natural ingredients and materials.

A word for the wise – if you do find yourself using a salicylic acid-infused sheet mask, be sure to use it once a week as a MAXIMUM.

If you use it any more frequently than that, you may find your skin worse off than it was before. And nobody, EVER said, “I want the sheet mask that will irritate my skin daily!”

So pull the breaks on how often you use these types.

10. Improve The Texture of Your Skin

Sheet masks that contain mild exfoliants will help improve your skin’s texture.

Again, common sense prevails, so don’t overdo it with the frequency – once a week for an exfoliating sheet mask, folks! No more frequently than that, please!

Check out Madeca Derma 100% Pure Cotton Mask to revitalize and give your skin that youthful glow you so desire.

11. Help to Absorb Excess Dirt and Oils from Your Skin

Look no further than the Japanese Bonchotan cloth fibers of the Mecmor Black Cleansing Facial Treatment Rose Serum Sheet Mask to detoxify your skin, and remove excess dirt and oils from your skin. Yes, please! Right away, please!

Take note – this mask is recommended to be left on for between 20-40 minutes. A perfect excuse for a big chunk of me-time.

12. Decongest Your Clogged Skin

So I bet you thought there was no such thing as a mud sheet mask, right? Well, think again!

If you are desperate for a mud mask in a mess-free, fuss-free sheet mask form, look no further than Starskin. Their Silkmud Pink French Clay Sheet Mask will decongest and purify your face like never before.

I love masks that come in two parts, to allow for a little more wiggle room when applying.

So pop this beauty on, let the kaolin clay, pink mud, and bentonite do the heavy lifting, and remove all of the impurities and congestion from your skin.

Need this now!

13. Help to Brighten Dark Spots

Another skin experience that won’t be cured by even the best of sheet masks. But it doesn’t mean they won’t be helped with a quick fix by the right one.

I have to revisit Mecmor Soothing Vitamin C Dreamy Treatment Mask to help fade dark spots and brighten your skin.

This sheet mask is rich in Vitamin C, Hyaluronic Acid and Peptides which will all aid in helping diminish those dark spots while hydrating and smoothing your face.

And there it is; I have guided you through my reasons why you need a sheet mask right now – and even provided a recommendation or two (or 13 or more!) but keep reading for the fine print.

Let’s discuss the stuff they don’t always tell you on the back of the packaging.

How to Apply a Sheet Mask

We may have discussed the reasons why you need a sheet mask, but we really should go over how to use one properly, right?

Be sure to clean your face first!

There is absolutely nothing to gain from applying a sheet mask to a dirty face, or face full of makeup.

So, go ahead and take the extra time to thoroughly cleanse your face prior to popping on your sheet mask.

Step 1. With a warm face cloth (not scalding hot, just warm) gently wash your face and apply your favorite cleanser.

Step 2. Remove cleanser and clean face with warm face cloth.

Step 3. Apply your sheet mask and lie back , relax and chill while the mask does the work.

But wait, would you like to super-size that sheet mask treatment? Then read on, my friend.

Beauty Hacks for a More Rewarding Face Mask Regime

Why not make a proper mini self-care treatment out of a simple sheet mask?

Start by adding a scented candle or an oil burner with your favorite relaxation blend.

Add some soft, relaxation music, comfy clothes, and create your very own, luxurious spa treatment at home.

Just in case nobody told you, you can place hydrating products on your face, UNDERNEATH the sheet mask to help enrich and enhance the entire process.

It’s all about the layers!

Think of your favorite ultra-rich hydrating moisturizer or treatment serum.

After you remove your sheet mask, you can spritz your face with your favorite rose water or hydrating spray. This will help to reconstitute the serum that’s left behind.

And then, go ahead and massage it in further. Your skin will thank you!

.

How Long Can You Leave Your Sheet Mask on For?

This is where the rule-breakers should go to the back of the classroom!

Always follow the instructions when it comes to how long to leave your sheet mask on for.

It is not going to work better if you leave it on longer. In fact, you may well end up with a reaction or redness. Or the sheet mask itself may dry out and be difficult to prize off your face (and no one wants that).

So follow the rules. If it states to leave the mask on for 10 minutes, leave it on for 10 minutes and call it a quick treatment for the day.

How to Choose the Right Mask for Your Skin Type

  • salicylic acid
  • benzoyl peroxide
  • yogurt
  • papaya
  • oatmeal
  • aloe vera

Dark Marks and Pigmentation

If you’re experiencing melasma, hyper-pigmentation or dark spots, look for these ingredients:

  • Vitamin C

  • AHA’s
  • lactic acid
  • pineapple

Fine Lines

  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin E

Oily Skin

Look for these ingredients:

  • salicylic acid
  • glycolic acid
  • sulfur
  • charcoal

The takeaway here is to know your skin, and be sure to do your reading and researching!

And while we’re on that note, be sure to avoid masks that contain alcohol!

.

How Often Should You Be Using A Sheet Mask?

It’s not entirely unacceptable to use sheet masks daily.

So quite literally, there are reasons why you not only need a sheet mask right now but reasons to use them ALWAYS!

In fact, certain K-Beauty makeup and skincare worshippers live by a multiple-sheets-per-day ritual.

Although this sounds enticing to me, I don’t know if my time-management skills can stretch to that amount of “me-time”!

And, as I mentioned in my 13 reasons why sheet mask section above, remember that exfoliating sheet masks, and masks containing harsher ingredients like salicylic acid, or benzoyl peroxide should be used once a week at most.

Less is best with those exceptions, for sure.

.

What About What They Are Made From?

Oh, I’m so glad you asked!

This is very important, too.

And it’s worth being aware of not only how the material your sheet mask is made from affects you, but also our planet.

Try to look for biodegradable sheet masks. Or, at the very least, invest in sheet masks that are sold in a large quantity or bulk tub.

I love the To Do List Honey Glow Mask it’s made with honey and propolis extract to heal and soothe your skin. And best of all it comes in a soft pack like hand wipes and you get 30 in one pack.

Great idea right?

This way you can help reduce the amount of waster a single sheet mask use can produce. It’s quite eye-opening when you think about it.

Single sheet masks can consist of a plastic backing sheet on one side, a paper or cardboard sheet on the other side.

And then there is the mask itself. Often they are made from a blend of plastics, nylons, plastic microfibers, that don’t biodegrade and can’t be recycled.

Plus the single-serving packaging that it is sold in.

That’s a lot of waste.

Keep that in mind the next time you are looking for a new treat for yourself in the sheet mask realm.

Remember to go natural, go biodegradable, and go bulk.

You also want a mask that actually does it’s job and holds the product well.

If you’re still in a pinch, check out The Body Shop Drops of Youth Concentrate Sheet Mask.

Not only will this mask leave your skin feeling fresh and lovely, but it’s also ALL biodegradable. Yep, beauty and relaxation without guilt.

Certain fabrics may not be strong enough to hold the weight of a heavy gel solution, so look for .

So keep an eye out for what the mask is made from. Hydrogels are robust and also flex a little to the forms of your face. But are they environmentally sound? Not so much.

The Lululun Face Mask is a 3 layered cotton mask that again, is presented in a bulk pack of 32. I keep thinking, “why didn’t I think of that?” Brilliant, right?

Or perhaps you are yet to experience Innisfree 100% Biodegradable My Real Squeeze Sheet Masks.

Innisfree has worked hard and fast to be part of the solution to reducing the waste that has come as a direct result of single-use sheet masks.

Their 18-strong range of completely biodegradable sheet masks are well worth a look if this is important to you, or something you will lean towards in the future.

It’s definitely worth sampling a few different types to find out what works best for you.

Why Sheet Masks Are So Great

  • affordable
  • portable
  • quick treatment with maximum benefits
  • usually excess serum in the packet which can be saved and stored for application later in the day
  • better still – use that excess serum and add it to a dry sheet for an extra full sheet mask treatment
  • trim the eyelid area off the mask and give yourself an eye mask at another time (2 for the price of one treatment!)
  • they are classified as “occlusive” meaning that a seal or barrier is formed; in the case of a sheet mask, this is a physical barrier, therefore there is nowhere for the serum to go. It also can’t evaporate so the treatment can be that much more effective.

However…

I was going to finish up with a section on some guilty pleasures of the sheet mask world. A few more decadent choices that perhaps, you’d explore for a special occasion.

But having learnt exactly how impactful the nature of our disposable way of life is on the world, I decided against it.

Sheet masks are such a luxurious, pampering beauty products. And the last thing we tend to think of when we think of pampering, are the consequences.

But to know that we DO have options and that we can make more sustainable choices is invaluable.

I want to leave you with the thought that there are many high quality, more environmentally aware choices you can make with your me-time.

Orgaid Organic Sheet Mask Set is biodegradable. The box that the sheet masks are housed in is recyclable. Only the lining inside the box is aluminum, to keep the sheet masks fresh. So ultimately that has to be thrown out with your trash.

But it’s a big start.

So the takeaways for my 13 reasons why you need a sheet mask right now are many and varied. And yet again, this post became way more complex than my original intentions!

Next time you require a little self-care, do your best to pick one of the masks I mentioned above.

Or even still, make your own at home with re-usable cotton that you can wash and re-wash.

In fact, I think I just decided what my next blog post will be all about!

Do you have a sheet mask you can’t live without? Would you entertain the notion of switching to a biodegradable one if you discovered that your sheet mask will still be on the planet in 400 years from now?
